Winter

Toronto Engagement Photography | Dual Seasons | Peter + Cristina

One of the biggest challenges I see most couples face about engagement photography is the “when” and “where” portion. They spend so much time and energy on planning their wedding day that sometimes they forget about having to plan for it.

My suggestion is to go for contrast compared to your wedding photos. Generally both Wedding and engagement end up being used in homes as wall prints. If both photos are at the same time of year, around the same location, they have a tendency to blend in and don’t really stand out.

However, if both sessions are vastly different, the images stand out more. Spring wedding? How about a session in the fall or winter to change the colours. Wedding shoot scheduled to be in a park? Make the engagement sessions more urban.

Often when a couple books a wedding photography package with me, and engagement session is included. However there are times when I do standalone engagement sessions for various reasons.

With Peter and Cristina, I did not photograph their wedding because I was actually in their wedding party (they’re both close friends of mine). However they did approach me about shooting an engagement session. Their wedding was in the fall, so I told them my suggestion, and they went full in. In fact, we ended up going with two mini-sessions. One in the winter at a park in Etobicoke, and the other in the summer downtown in Toronto’s famous Graffiti Alley.

Couple those images together with their lovely images from their fall wedding, and the pieces on their wall now tell a story.

Wow! It's been an extremely cold week in Toronto. And like most people, when the cold air hits your face, you mutter a couple of swearwords to yourself and you start to daydream about the upcoming summer season, and picturing life on a beach or a patio. But stay around out there for a few minutes longer, and you begin to notice the great beauty that the winter season can bring.

A perfect example of winter beauty, was Valentina + Denis' civil ceremony last year, in Mississauga. I first met Val + Denis while photographing their friend's wedding. Both of them were Maid of Honour/Best Man (I wish I could take credit for starting a little chemistry between them, but they were already an engaged). While they opted to have a destination wedding in the Caribbean, they still wanted to have a civil ceremony here in Toronto.

That morning was one of the biggest snowfalls of the year! Driving across the city, I felt like a lead character in Walking Dead driving across a empty highway. But, as empty as the roads were, all of Val + Denis' friends and family made it out to celebrate their special day.  After the lovely ceremony and some family formals, I was able to convince the two of them to just step outside real quick as it was a perfect mix of the right amount and size of snow. Thankfully, being the good sports they are, they agreed, and I couldn't be happier with the results!

When I meet with potential clients for the first time, I have just as many questions for them as they do for me. It's not only about availability on the date and the packages being offered, but also personalities. With spending a good portion of the day together, you want to make sure you'll get along. One of the questions I ask most of my couples is "describe your party atmosphere". Some receptions are reserved, some are a mix, and some are partiers of legendary status. Maria & George's wedding was hands down, the party of the year.

When you have two very loud & proud cultures (Macedonian & Italian), you know when the music starts, people are going to light it up. Flags, Steelers Jerseys, Cat-Calls of "Deeee-troit!!", and what could be the greatest thing I have ever seen at a reception.. a midnight Burger King Whopper Bar. This entire atmosphere perfectly summed up Maria & George's relationship, two people who are best friends, who love to celebrate their passions almost as much as they love each other.

I had just as an amazing time as the guests!
